High on the bluffs above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers, the Lawrence L. Huser Astronomy Center gives visitors a front-row seat to some of the darkest skies in southwest Wisconsin. The observatory houses several high-powered telescopes, including a large instrument in a steerable dome, and sits just a short walk beyond the Wyalusing State Park office. Dedicated in 2003 to longtime park ranger Lawrence Huser, the center reflects his decades of service and the park’s commitment to sharing the wonders of the night sky with the public.
The StarSplitters of Wyalusing, a local nonprofit club of amateur astronomers, operate the Huser Astronomy Center and bring it to life with engaging programs. From May through October, they offer free public astronomy nights that begin with an indoor presentation on topics like basic stargazing, astrophotography, or space exploration, followed by outdoor viewing through their telescopes if skies are clear. The group also arranges special programs for schools and other organizations, helps visitors learn to use their own telescopes, and maintains an active schedule and updates through their website and social media
