Green Cloud Picnic Shelter is a cozy stone-and-log pavilion perched high above the river confluence, perfect for a quiet picnic with big views and a short stroll to the Passenger Pigeon Monument.
Tucked in its own clearing with a small parking area nearby, Green Cloud is designed for smaller groups or single families who want a more private spot than the park’s larger shelters. From the shelter, an easy path leads over to the Passenger Pigeon Monument and nearby Indian mounds, so it is simple to pair lunch with a short, meaningful walk through one of Wyalusing’s most thought-provoking historic sites.
Historically, the Green Cloud Picnic Area honors Ho-Chunk Chief Green Cloud, who led the last Native community to camp on these bluffs before being forced to leave in the 1880s. The rustic shelter itself was built around 1938 by New Deal-era crews using native stone and massive log timbers to mimic a natural cliff outcrop, and for more than eighty years it has offered shade and shelter to visitors contemplating the same sweeping views and complex history of this confluence landscape.
