The Friends of Wyalusing State Park is a volunteer organization dedicated to supporting and enhancing one of Wisconsin's oldest and most scenic state parks, located at the confluence of the Mississippi and Wisconsin Rivers near Prairie du Chien. Formed in 1998 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, this grassroots Friends group channels the passion of community members who care deeply about preserving, protecting, and promoting the park's natural beauty, cultural heritage, and recreational opportunities for future generations. Wyalusing State Park itself was created in 1917 as one of Wisconsin's early state parks.
The organization actively supports the park through a wide range of volunteer initiatives and programs. Members organize educational naturalist programs and special events such as Harvest Fest in September. The Friends group publicizes programs sponsored by the Stargazers, along with seasonal celebrations like pumpkin carving events and regular volunteer work days. The group also manages fundraising efforts and grant applications to support capital improvements, interpretive displays, educational materials, and facility enhancements that benefit park visitors. Additionally, the organization established an endowment fund in 2009 to provide long-term financial support for the park's natural resources, educational programming, and recreational needs. Through these combined efforts, the Friends of Wyalusing State Park ensures that this spectacular natural treasure—with its bluff-top overlooks, hiking trails, Native American burial mounds, and diverse ecosystems—remains vibrant and accessible for all who visit.
